I’m a Lecturer in American Studies at the University of East Anglia interested in African American, black international and diaspora history.

In March 2012 I completed my PhD thesis at the University of Leeds entitled ‘We Shall Win Our Freedoms Together’: African Americans, South Africa and Black International Protest, 1945-1960′. This research project explored the mutually constitutive relationship between state power and black international protest during the early Cold War. By analysing government records, newspapers, correspondence, magazines, film, novels and musical performances, my research demonstrates how black activists in both countries strategically forged political and cultural connections with one another throughout the 1940s and 1950s.
